Welcome to this site, which offers a window into both my research and teaching interests. I am an assistant professor at Valparaiso University, where I teach courses on modern United States history. Currently, I am also revising a book manuscript entitled “Union Made: Working People and the Rise of Social Christianity in Chicago” and co-editing a volume on Christianity and the working classes in industrial America (contract pending with University of Illinois Press). Should you like to get in touch, do not hesitate to e-mail me at heath.carter@valpo.edu.

A word on the photos:
The header depicts men and children who were involved in a livery drivers’ strike, standing in front of a Chicago church in December of 1903. It is courtesy of the Chicago Daily News.
The photo of me was taken by Chicago-based photographer Lisa Beth Anderson. You can find more of her work here.
