Welcome to this site, which offers a window into both my research and teaching interests.

I am currently revising a book manuscript entitled “Union Made: Working People and the Rise of Social Christianity in Chicago.”  In August 2012 I will begin work as an assistant professor of modern United States history at Valparaiso University.  Should you like to get in touch in the meantime, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at hcarter@nd.edu.

A word on the photos:

The header depicts men and children who were involved in a livery drivers’ strike, standing in front of a Chicago church in December of 1903.  It is courtesy of the Chicago Daily News.

The photo of me was taken by Chicago-based photographer Lisa Beth Anderson.  You can find more of her work here.
