Current Research

I am currently working on a new and sweeping history of  American Social Christianity.  Whereas the Social Gospel has most often been thought of as a discrete movement, which arose amidst the industrial turmoil of the late-nineteenth century and fell into decline following the First World War, I plan to recast that movement as one moment in the unfolding of a much wider tradition – extending back at least to the early decades of the nineteenth century and forward to the present day.

I am crafting a narrative that synthesizes the experiences of a broad range of elite and ordinary actors from across the vast and heterogeneous landscape of American Christianity – one which emphasizes both the achievements and  foibles of a Social Gospel tradition that has deeply shaped life in the modern United States.
